So, uh, I forgot I had an Ell Jay. LOL OOPS

Moving on!

I was going to go into DC for the inauguration, but my connection ran out of tickets (thanks a lot, uncle dan) and also it is going to be BATSHIT INSANE EVERYWHERE in there, so I guess it's for the best.

INAUGURATION PARTY, MY BASEMENT, JIM LEHRER. FUCK YES

(I mean, I can't be the only political geek around here. <s>And the chief of staff attends the inauguration too, right?</s>)

Other than that, you know, life hasn't been too eventful. Got my driver's license over the summer, am now driving like a pro (a very reluctant one). Still applying to colleges jesus christ but hopefully that'll be over with soon. Pretty sure now about majoring in some kind of history thing. Growing a moustache. (Trying to avoid being murdered by my sister because of said moustache.) Got a twitter thing because of fakerahmemanuel and Stephen Fry. That's...pretty much it.

Because I have assloads of homework due this week, I'm going to go fuck around in Photoshop now.

despite not knowing wittgenstein

I think I've finally narrowed down what I'll study at university when I go up. I've always known it was going to be something in the humanities field, but that's such a broad term I may as well have said I was undecided. (That would have at least it easier for others.)

Art is out because as much as I like it, there's less and less likelihood that I'll ever view it as anything other than a hobby. I am taking Art History right now (AP class argh) but, unfortunately, I think that's part of what turned me off. Maybe it's just the teaching style, maybe it's just the focus on Western Christian art in a course that touts itself as covering all the continents, or maybe it's just something else. I don't know. Right now I'm just hoping I don't fail the AP exam.

Maths is out because I hate it.

Science is out because yeah, it's generally interesting and outer space is incredible, but there is no way I'd be able to devote myself to any of the various aspects of it the way a career in the field would demand of me. Also, it has maths.

English, well, I'm not throwing that one away just yet. I know, however, that I wouldn't be able to be an "English major" because I can't do grammar. I'm a bit weak on analysis, too--it's fun to think about books that way (sometimes), but when it comes to putting it on paper my brain just goes phut. I won't be actively avoiding English-related lessons, though, because I do enjoy "creative writing," as it's called for some reason. (Isn't nearly all writing creative to some extent?)

This just in: my SAT Reasoning score is 2100 out of 2400. I think there's something wrong there. (And while I'm doing bulletins: my 18th birthday is tomorrow. That also seems wrong.)

Now, history. Part of my enthusiasm here is probably fuelled by my fantastic teacher this year (AP US History, natch) and for good reason. He doesn't just teach at us, he has discussions with us and tells us entertaining stories that relate to the subject, however tangentially. Just the other day, as we started talking about World War II, the class had this terrific discussion/debate regarding the concentration camps in America and in Europe. Mr. Evans told us of a lecture he attended by Simon Weisenthal, and I was just so disappointed when he was done that I went to the library this weekend and checked out 20 or so books on WWII. (oh god I'm never going to be able to read them all)
I may be shit at remembering dates and similar specifics (one reason I sort of dislike my Art History class) but, as I've proved to myself time and time again through various fandoms, I seem to have quite a knack for remembering the anecdotal and the psychological (not used here in the Wilde sense) and, sometimes, the just plain trivial. This is because it's interesting ("Well, yeah," you may say, but hold on) but also because goddamnit this stuff is Exciting. To think that these things actually happened, that people actually said what they did and that they had such an effect on the course of things is almost...unthinkable, actually. In short: It's freaking cool, man.

Hopefully my schedule for next year won't have to be changed (unless my counsellor continues to insist that I take another year of maths) and I'll be able to continue focussing on what I actually enjoy being in school for. (Yay, AP English!)

And fuck I can't believe I spent this long TL;DRing about school when I have a fuckload of homework to do aksdhlsdkfuiwausdfja

drrrrrrr

Here is what I have been doing this break:
>internet
>college visits
>internet
>movies/tv shows
>fanfic
>internet
<s>>homework</s>
>pokemon
>internet
>reading
>internet
>internet
>internet

And I go back to school tomorrow.
Clearly, I am going to be the best college student ever.

At least I have some observations from my absolutely productive time-wasting!

The first series/season zero of Yuugiou is the creepiest shit ever. (This is coming from someone who started crying during Vertigo, but still.) It is also so freaking weird compared to the later stuff; I kind of wish Toei had kept control of the series. Although maybe it's good that they didn't, because NAS made everybody a lot less straight haha I'm shallow.
And here's where I get really geeky: Bonnie "Prince" Billy's song, 'I See A Darkness,' (which I got from an amazing Wilson FST, shut up) would totally be such a good song for one (or more!) of the pairings in this show, especially in season zero. The main person could be Yuugi, the darkness Yami, and the friend most likely would be Jou. In the later series it would have to be more like Bakura/Malik v. their Yamis, or something. OH GOD I AM SUCH A DORK

Okay, Jeeves and Wooster! Oh honey when I think of you two my brain just melts. It doesn't help at all that you're played by Fry and Laurie. And your fans are some of the nicest people ever. In the case of complete confusion: I finally started on season 3, hence the giddiness. I'm a bit disappointed that there is no Bingo nor Gussie thus far, though, and they're writing Jeeves a bit...I hesitate to say goofier, but he's certainly not as restrained as he should be/was in the books. Although it does make for some good new unintentionally(?) slashy scenes, hee. And Stephen sajdjagkjdasg so hot, Laurie dgsakdgas utterly adorable. They are brilliant comic actors, seriously.
Sort of related: The book Making History, which I stayed up horribly late last night re-reading, is pretty darn amazing. And I'm not just saying that because it's written by Stephen Fry! Kavalier & Clay still ranks higher as one of the best books I have read, but Making History is pretty close because it's not as depressing, lol. If I were a film director right now, that and The Picture of Dorian Gray would be at the top of my list. Steve would be played by Michael Cera, of course, but I'm still having some trouble casting Michael Young. ...How much of a geek am I? Don't answer that.

oh man i am such a loser

Somehow I decided that writing this would be the most hilarious thing ever. I didn't even put any effort into it (only half an hour, tops) so it's kind of crap, and I've already Rickrolled 81 people in two hours. (Can it be called that, though, in this format?) ...Jesus, it's happening quickly! (When I opened this window, it was 78.)

Hopefully I won't get banned, lol.

edited to add: an hour later and it's 108 people. Wait, 110. That's faster than pretty much any other fic I've posted on there. Seems like a stupidly generic description really does work, as does slapping on a R&R!! (That was part of the joke, which makes me a bit sad, I guess.)

It's kind of weird trying to get back into fandoms that I never really left. Well, I guess it depends on how "leaving" a fandom is defined. I never deleted fucking everything, so in that sense I haven't left anything I was ever involved in (lol packrat). I definitely stopped paying attention to new content, both canon- and fanon-wise, which I suppose is the main part of a fandom...so I guess I did leave several fandoms. But I never stopped caring about those series, so uh what?

Basically: DAMMIT WHY DID I DO SUCH A THING

I'm not dead!

Seeing as how I have not yet joined the choir invisible and all that, I uh I lost my train of thought

See kids this is why you should not post on less than four hours of sleep

Anyway, uh, I'm going away for the weekend (academic bowl competition, natch) and when I get back I'm gonna see what the heck I want to do with this thing.
I'm thinking of doing some kind of friends cut (if I even spelled that right) because some of the people on my flist are there for the most superficial reasons, and those reasons don't really exist anymore. (Change in some interests &c.)

If you are a dang cool person, you are probably gonna stay. If I know you IRL or from DA (way back when I used to be on there, when dinosaurs roamed the skies) you are probably gonna stay. If you friended me recently, I'm not gonna defriend you just like that, unless you want to defriend me because I'm boring (don't worry, I admit it)

so yes

Who has been paying attention to the presidential primaries?
two thoughts:

The Washington Post Magazine has a terrific feature on Mike Gravel (a Democratic presidental candidate who I wish I could vote for) here.

Also: I finally saw the 2005 version of The Producers. It was more ribald than the original and seemed to take itself less seriously, but it was still awesome. Nathan Lane was, of course, beyond excellent, Will Ferrell was hilarious, and Matthew Broderick was surprisingly adorable. (...I still like Gene Wilder better) And oh man so much gay in this. SO MUCH.

I'm not sure which version I prefer, but the newer one is definitely a fun movie.

OH AND:

SUPERBAD IS AMAZING

(meant to do it last year, but didn't. whoops.)
10: Be less pretentious.
11: Learn how to fucking drive already.
12: Focus more on what colleges to apply to and how to look good for them, not on how to look good for the twits at school, dorkwad.
gratuitious post for my own self-satisfaction

Hey.
Hey.

Hey.

I'm in Tamworth, New Hampshire. (Our house is in Chocorua, but the internet's here.)

I spent all week hiking, swimming/canoeing in Lake Chocorua, and sleeping. It was seriously cathartic, if that's the word I want, and I am feeling so allergic right now it is not really funny but it was so good. It's great to just get away sometimes. I will admit we had a laptop on which we watched movies, but only late at night after star-watching (the Milky Way was so frigging clear and there were shooting stars practically every night that it wasn't cloudy.) and they were Good Movies. Bright Young Things (***** YES), The Station Agent (*****), All The President's Men (****1/2), Lost in Translation (****), oh man. And I've been slogging through the second volume of Proust's In Search of Lost Time/Remembrance of Things Past, ahaha I'm pretentious but it's really very enjoyable, I just have to be in the right mood otherwise it's completely inpenetrable. I also finished this great old science fiction book called Rule Golden--I don't remember the author's full name, but his initials are D.K.

Tomorrow we head for Boston, stopping there for a day before finishing our trip back home. I keep getting confused re Cambridge because the one I know is in Britain, the one Fry & Laurie went to and all that, but I'm dumb. I'm still interested in checking out both campuses there (Harvard, etc.) because hey, college! Even though I'll never go to either. And my time's just about up here so that's it.

Another list, because AUFH I GET UP AT FIVE A.M. TOMORROW

1) Finally got to see Gale again. She didn't look any older, but at the same time she...did! Some kind of college aura. I inflicted various things on her (Strangers With Candy, oh god, and British miscellany) and Fun Was Had. Attempted to glean knowledge re college, but was sadly neurotic as usual and therefore may have not absorbed it as well as I could have. Sorry!

2) lol last day of work (today!) was amazing, the education department went to Six Flags. WE WERE SO PRODUCTIVE IT WAS TERRIFYING. Brad freaked out on the Teacup ride (LOLOLOLOMG), Bill screamed like a girl on the Joker ride (...I did too), Allegro and Liz were frightened by the popcorn, the Superman ride was incredible, and a bunch of us had our picture taken with Green Lantern and ROBIN ASHFASGFAGA HE WAS ADORABLE. And he waved at us when he saw us a second time, aaaaaagh oh man we were such homos it was hilarious. I love them so much.

3) ~*~NEW HAMPSHIRE~*~ FOR TEN DAYS BITCHES

the weekend, listed

1) recently updated codycon with a second House/Wilson FST; am a massive dork.

2) hate eggplant and am never eating it again ever.

3) saw the French film 'Mon Meilleur Ami' (My Best Friend); loved it, was very moved. Music was incredible, hope there is a soundtrack for purchase.

4) can't believe it's almost time to leave for New Hampshire (zero hour is around 6 a.m. Friday morning). Have not yet started packing, but have gotten fourteen novels (plus the five from last time at the library) for the trip. Clearly, something will go wrong. (Similar to the forgotten bathing suit of last year's trip.)

5) have developed an inappropriate interest in (fictional) gay Nazis. Blame lies on Donna Barr's Desert Peach, along with the works of HerrWolff and Kaenhoushaki. (It also lies, albeit indirectly, on Diana's Antique White House.)

6) came close to joy-induced spontaneous combustion at Borders two days ago; a box set of 'A Bit of Fry And Laurie' was there, completely subtitled, and a 30% off coupon was on hand. In episode two (approximately) of season two, there is quite possibly the most deliciously softly divinely amazing piece of wordplay in television history.

7) finally started piecing together an outfit for the first day of school; am a screaming bender and a total loser for even caring, but at least that awesome Rufus Wainwright shirt will be arriving soon.

Deathly Hallows.

Overall, I thought it was a good end to the series.

The epilogue was pretty much dreck, though. (I mean that in a nice way. I think.)

NURMENGARD=NUREMBERG VERY SUBTLE OLOLOL

The Prince's Tale and the King's Cross chapters were good ones, in my opinion. (YES I KNEW SNAPE WAS GOOD ALL ALONG HUZZAH)
The relationships were written a bit dreadfully--hints of badfic and all that. Example: Harry basically passing out when he snogs Ginny, what? And Lupin, ugh, it was like character rape. Except not really, because, well, you know. Her character to start with. But blagh, all that stuff with Tonks was so lame. If it had been handled better, it might not actually have bothered me, I dunno. Except yay, he died, so now he gets to be with Sirius again, and I'm a terrible person! And Ron and Hermione, oh god, whatever, but I did laugh when Harry was all "I love her like a sister!" because IN YOUR FACE, HARRY/HERMIONE SHIPPERS LOL

There were some major allusions going on, like the sword in the lake and the effect the locket!Horcrux had on the wearer and whatnot. They were so obvious! I mean, jeez, if you're going to borrow from past tales like that, do it a bit better, you know?

I heard someone online say recently that while Rowling isn't the best writer, her imagination is killer. And I agree. If she was a better author, I might not have finished the book so quickly (FOUR HOURS LOLOL) but I definitely wanted to know how things were going to turn out.

I AM SO ANGRY FRED DIED. Well, not really, but. Why couldn't she have killed off someone else?! At least Neville didn't die. I would have definitely been pissed off if he had. (That chapter header, with the picture of happy-yet-battered!Neville--SO CUTE. ASDASFG.) Or Percy, thank god he was okay. I've got a soft spot for him. (That last-minute miraculous turnabout of his was really shoddy, though. It could have been done better. Same idea goes for Malfoy, she just glossed over so much with him.) Colin, though--I almost cried. And poor Peter, oh man. He really didn't deserve that.
(Also--OH GOD FRED DIED IT IS THE END OF THE WORLD, then Lupin dies and oh nooooo abloobloobloo whatever. Huh? Fix your goddamn priorities, Harry!)

I'm still a little confused by the One Wand-fight to Rule Them All.

I actually barely even read the epilogue--just skimmed it to see what the hell it was about. Verdict? LAAAAAAME. The book already has a happy ending--it didn't even need a goddamn epilogue! If Harry had died, now, then it could have used an epilogue. Come to think of it, I was kind of disappointed when he didn't. I don't know. They just made such a big deal out of it (OF COURSE he was one of the frigging Horcruxes, that was one of the most obvious things ever since halfway through the 6th book or something) that it was kind of like, oh hey, he beat Voldemort, yaaaay. It felt anti-climatic, I guess.

So. It's finally over, and she had better damn well not write any spin-offs.

comic geekery

I've been a closet Tintin fan for ages, since I was six or somewhere around there. So you can imagine my sheer happiness when The New Yorker did a feature on him for the 100th anniversary of Herge's birthday. (It was glorious.) It was in that article that I first came across the news there were plans for a trilogy of Tintin films.

I'm still not sure if I was horrified or overjoyed. Most likely a combination. Horrijoyed.

Because while Stephen Spielberg would probably not be that bad (I hope), the idea of Peter Jackson--of Lord of The Rings fame--scares me. I mean, as movies, they were fine (I think, I only saw one and a half) but as adaptations? Uhhhh, no. Of course, I'm always really hard on book-to-film adaptations, but I have seen good ones! The LotR films? No.
And there's the issue of trilogies--it's rare that they're all good; in my experience, the first is great, the second is okay, the third isn't even worth watching.

And then, today, I came across this little bit of news.
Jackson said WETA will stay true to Remi's original designs in bringing the cast of Tintin to life, but that the characters won't look cartoonish.

"Instead," Jackson said, "we're making them look photorealistic; the fibers of their clothing, the pores of their skin and each individual hair. They look exactly like real people — but real Herge people!"

WHAT

SRSLY
SRSLY YOU GUYS
I DO NOT THINK THAT IS A GOOD IDEA

The "pores of their skin"? That sounds disgusting. Why not animate it as a cartoon, for fuck's sake, it's a CARTOON. What the hell is with Hollywood's obsessing over 3-D animation these days? I mean, Pixar is awesome (Brad Bird yes please OH MY GOD I JUST FOUND OUT HE DIRECTED THE IRON GIANT AHDJSHFJDK) but there's something particularly charming and expressive about 2-D that can't necessarily carry over to 3-D animation. I mean, if you're trying to go for realism, then a character makes a bizarre cartoony face, the effect can end up bordering on creepy.

...I don't know. It could work, I suppose, if everything else was really good. I remember enjoying The Polar Express, (even though they totally butchered the book and the train conductor looked like Mr. Lundy and they made Santa into Jesus lolol) because the animation was nifty. I haven't seen it again since, though, so I don't know if I'd still feel the same way.

I'm kind of rambling now, so. I guess I'll be a little lenient (because I'm supposed to be working) and give them some leeway if they keep Tintin and everybody European because, uh, they're European. (That was my only real problem with Ratatouille; the American accents. I mean, what? Remy and Linguini have French/Italian-sounding names, they've clearly been born in France, and yet they sound American? Gah.)

because i've killed my brain

this seems to be an appropriate time to write intentionally!badfic.

The method: stream of consciousness, i.e. writing it as I think without an attempt to make it into a narrative. I think terribly. Especially when I'm tired.
The madness: It was going to be Yuugiou, but I've written/read so many crackfics in that genre I figured it'd be better to go with something like House. Of course, I could always do this again.

<marquee>HERE WE GO HUP HUP</marquee>

So House, like, walks into his office (I mean limps) and sits down at his desk without checking to see if his fellows (lol makes me think of lotr) have a case or something, and of course they're annoyed because he just ignored them and Cameron's been bitching at them all morning about idk Chase being a pushover and Foreman is ready to stab her in the eyes oh man that would be awesome. So the three of them get up and are about to confront him but Wilson comes out of nowhere and barges into House's office so they sit back down and wait. Because idk they're lame. Except for Foreman, he's kind of cool, so he tells Chase to be all subtle and stand where he can overhear Wilson and House.
Wilson's bitching about something like House sticking his blow-dryer into the toilet the last time House came over to the hotel, and House thinks this is hilarious because Wilson's hair is all like going everywhere like he didn't even try to style it with his fingers. When House points this out (in a very witty way) Wilson has some half-assed explanation for why his fingers be good for that (idk shut up) and House says Wilson's fingers are fat. So Wilson starts crying, and Chase narrates this latest to the others and they all start laughing because lol fat Wilson jokes ftw. And Wilson's still crying and House is bored so he opens some random website on his computer and starts ignoring Wilson. So Wilson confesses that he got like no sleep last night because he was uh at a whorehouse all night and came straight to work from there. Naturally House snaps to attention and is all "LOLWUT SRSLY" because seriously what? He thinks Wilson's totally joking because Wilson's good at that but he's actually not, so House calls in Foreman and the others just because. Wilson flips out, of course. Then Chase blurts out that they were listening the whole time anyway and Wilson punches him in the face YES. He also punches Cameron for good measure. Foreman sekritly hides in a corner and hopes they forget about him. They do, as House asks for more SCANDALOUS details, and Wilson is all reluctant until House says he'll tell Cuddy unless Wilson spills and then Wilson tells him to shut up and shoves him out onto the balcony joining their offices because that's ttly a private place.
Wilson's all looking around and making sure there's nobody who can overhear until House smacks him and tells him to get on with it, so Wilson stutters out that he wasn't a client at the whorehouse.
The silence drags out soooooooo long, Wilson's about to go back inside before House clears his throat. Wilson's ready for House to totally humiliate him and disown him as a friend and everything, but actually House thinks that his being a manwhore is the coolest thing EVER. So he asks Wilson to demonstrate.
And there is sex.

THE END

lol I actually kind of want to write that now.

I keep telling myself to not be such a recluse but then, I don't listen to me in the first place so.

LOL WHAT IS THAT SENTENCE. The potential English major in me is crying.

I am being soooo weird re fandoms right now.

Present Tense
House/Wilson/permutations thereof
TDS/TCR RPS (ohgodwhy)

Past Tense
Pokemon
Yuugiou

Spur of The Moment
Reno 911
Are You Being Served
Dead Poets Society
CAPSLOCK_HOUSE/STUGH (do these even count)

IDKKKKKKKK
Tenipuri
ES21
that stuff

There's probably more, but... And STM doesn't even mean precisely that, it just means the ones I've recently (re)discovered in the past few months with the potential of switching over to PT. I NEED TO STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS SO SERIOUSLY BECAUSE WHAT THE HELL

ALSO I FEEL DIRTY FOR HAVING READ RPS.

I need to stop being such a recluse.

People need to shut up about imports from China. Yes, it's terrible that some fireworks malfunctioned, some pet food and toothpaste was tainted, and so on and so forth, but that is absolutely no call for America to shut itself off in a fit of xenophobic frenzy.

This whole thing is largely America's fault, really. That's not to say that China didn't drop the ball here and there, but who went to China in the first place? America wanted impossibly cheap food and products, and they figured China was the place for it--exchange rate and all that. Now America's outsourced nearly all of their essentials to places like China and Taiwan, and no longer has an infrastructure capable of growing or making sufficient goods to sustain itself. And they want to shut off immigration from Mexico, too?

America: If we cut ourselves off from the rest of the world, we are fucked.

My mom and I just rescued a baby rabbit.

It was in the middle of the road, no larger than my palm, and its eyes were barely open.
Its mother was nowhere to be seen.
We had to leave it under the bushes and flowers by a neighbour's house and hope for the best.

I wish nature was more careful sometimes.
